Marjorie Minnie’s birth certificate has his name as Walter James Varney (not Walter Ernest Verney). Might have suspected that this was different person, but maiden name of wife, daughter’s name and date of birth are correct. Must be same person. Listing as Ernest on Marjorie’s marriage certificate may simply be that the registrar muddled names as George Ernest Vernon’s father was called Ernest.

At the time of Marjorie’s birth in 1902, Walter and Ellen’s address was 10 Northfield Cottages, Pinner Green, Pinner.
As far as I've been able to find out, Walter Verney (or Varney) died around 1910, leaving Ellen to raise her children alone. She took a job as a nanny for the Settle family. She was devoutly religious, and is buried at Steyning Churchyard. The Settle family provided a fund to maintain her grave which, by the way, is looking a bit untidy these days.

Alison thought that Ellen’s family originated in the Boston area of Lincolnshire. Ellen married Ernest so she could look after his mother - seems strange by modern standards, doesn’t it?
Colin Vernon:
Alison Settle, for whom Ellen Verney worked as a Nanny, had two children - Meggie and John. Mrs. settle was a fashion writer for The Sunday Times and Vogue. Having lost her husband, John (I think) around 1910, she needed a nanny to look after the children, and Ellen was employed to do this. When Alison and I were young we would spend part of the summer with the Settles at wherever Alison Settle had rented a place, one of which was Sunt Farm. Meggie Settle married Robert Bowman of Fenwick.
