ellen verney with goats c1950
Very strange photo of Ellen Verney lying on a camp bed with two goats lying at the foot. Can't be absolutely sure it is Ellen but looks like her and phoot was found amongst family pictures. Looks to be taken late 1940s, and judging by the wheelchair she was ailing.

Ellen Verney's grave in Steyning churchyard. Thanks to Steyning Museum for the photo. Death date: 18th September 1951.

Many thanks to Steyning Museum volunteers for taking and emailing the photos to me.

The inscription reads:
In Loving Memory of Ellen Verney
Who died 18th September 1951
aged 74 years
'The Time of the Singing of Birds is Come'

It's interesting that this is a quotation from the 'Song that is Solomon's', as this was one of Alastair Dunn's favourite poems, and he used to quote from it on gifts to Alison over the years (Ellens grand-daughter), and his final bouquet to Alison at her funeral quoted a passage from it.

" Behold, thou art fair, my love;
Thine eyes are as doves eyes."
