If you have never visited Old Cullicudden kirkyard now is your chance - with expert company, on Saturday 21st May. Although most Archaeology Day activities will focus as usual on Kirkmichael you can also book a visit to Old Cullicudden (located down a turning towards the sea beyond Old Cullicudden school on the Culbokie to Balblair road) from 10am with expert Dr Jim Mackay leading you through the mystery and history of the strangely-carved stone ‘calvary cross’ tombstones to be found there. Limited parking. Please contact Verity Walker on Fortrose 620575 or via the project Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Kirkmichael if you would like to book a place.
At Kirkmichael (11 – 4) there will be tours (no need to book these) with project archaeologists Lynne and Lachlan McKeggie looking at the original test pits in the kirk floor, undertaking some excavation of the path route, and exploring the kirkyard from their perspective. In the marquee there will be some sample mini-digs for children plus a tricky ‘record, demolish and rebuild a wall’ activity – plus simple refreshments. See you there!
